Digital Persistent Identifier

The University of Kansas requires Principal Investigators (PIs) and Senior/Key Personnel (SKPs) to maintain authenticated ORCiD profiles in compliance with NSPM-33 Digital Persistent Identifier (DPI) requirements. These profiles must include disclosures on affiliations, funding, and appointments, and be updated annually, with support provided by KU Libraries and Research Offices.

Summary

University of Kansas policy requires Principal Investigators (PIs) or Senior/Key Personnel (SKPs) to maintain an authenticated ORCiD profile to comply with NSPM-33 requirements for Digital Persistent Identifiers (DPIs). The profile must include specific disclosures such as affiliations, appointments, funding sources, and support, and be updated annually. KU Lawrence and KUMC Research Offices will provide verification mechanisms and assist researchers with profile creation, updates, and visibility settings. Researchers are responsible for ensuring their profile is complete, accurate, and accessible to designated university offices.

Policy

The primary purpose of the Digital Persistent Identifier (DPI) policy is to ensure that University of Kansas researchers are in compliance with the National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) released in 2021 to “to strengthen protections of United States Government-supported Research and Development (R&D) against foreign government interference and exploitation,” as well as the related requirements in the White House Office of Science and Technology’s memo on “Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research.” Adoption of DPIs for researchers should also yield institutional and individual benefits to the research enterprise at KU by increasing the visibility of and simplifying the exchange of information about KU research.
